About Hyundai

Chung Ju-yung, the late founder of the Hyundai Group, created Hyundai as a construction company in 1947. Chung decided to enter into shipbuilding in the early 1970s ignoring that Hyundai had no experience, capital, or shipbuilding technology whatsoever. Despite these challenges, the company received orders for two 260,000-DWT crude oil tankers from Greek magnate George Livanos while Hyundai's Shipyard was still in the planning stages.
In March 1972, ground was broken on an empty stretch of beach in Ulsan to construct what would become the world's largest shipyard. Hyundai then started building the two oil tankers and the shipyard simultaneously. Two years later, in 1974, Hyundai held a ceremony to simultaneously name the two tankers and dedicate the shipyard.Capturing the imagination of the international maritime community, the event was a historical first step for Hyundai Heavy Industries.

Since HHI achieved an historic export record of 100 million dollars in 1972, 70-80%of its production has been dedicated for the overseas market. HHI has made an immense contribution for decades to the Korean economy through the acquisition of foreign currency by exportation. The unprecedented exportation record of 4.2 billion dollars in the year 2000 reduced the trade deficit that had come to the fore as a great crux on the Korean economy following the Asian economic crisis of 1997-8 With insufficient capital, technology and human resources committed to the shipbuilding industry, and countless barriers and deadlocks to struggle against, HHI always managed to overcome these barriers and play a leading role in developing Korea’s economy.

HHI continues to live up to its reputation as a leading global company that has created record figures and achievements since its establishment. The scope of HHI ranges diverse industries including shipbuilding, offshore, plant, engine, electro electric, green energy, construction equipment, and even information with its own research institutes. The history of Korean heavy industry is being made by HHI everyday. HHI will put its best efforts to continue as a reliable and solid enterprise for the 21st century.
